According to Joni Seager, “Maps don’t just reflect reality, they also shape it.” Throughout time, maps have been used to document places or spaces or periods of time. Maps have been utilized to document land possessions, annexations, explorations, empires and historic events. A popular usage of maps in today’s society is for marketing purposes to promote a destination and all it has to offer. In a recent Internet search of things to do on a family vacation, I came across this map of the Palm Springs area, which captured my interest and resulted in a short visit. Though I am from southern CA and travel I-10 from Phoenix to L.A. often, I had never been to Palm Springs. After seeing this map, I continued my search of this destination and booked a one night stay in Palm Desert adjacent to Palm Springs. I saw the value in using a map for the purpose of getting from here to there!

    2. What an interesting map! Do you know what year it was made? When you visited did you feel like the map was a good representation of the place? I’ve never been to Palm Springs, but it looks like a fun place 🙂

    3. What an interesting map indeed! It certainly seems to be a map designed for tourists: brightly colored, with images of things tourists might do (although ostensibly done at home, too). What do you think this map was emphasizing? How does this tie back into your conceptions of what maps should include, or why/how maps are important, and how we map our travels? How do you tie the map in with what we’re discussing in class?
